It's Turkey Day in Canada!!!

WOW!! I am one stuffed person tonight! Just got home from celebrating the Canadian Thanksgiving at my parent's home in Oakville, ON. Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, bean casserole (my FAVE), and corn made up the first course, THEN came dessert!!! Pecan pie, a chocolate wafer log cake we call a "Zebra Log" (thanks to my youngest daughter who loves all things zebra!) both made by my mom, and a pumpkin cheesecake made by my wife made up the dessert menu! Funny thing was, my mom didn't even have to ask me what I wanted for dessert! I got ALL THREE!!! but now, I feel like I gained 10 pounds! Those who know me really well know that it would take some sort of miracle for me to gain even 5 pounds at one meal! So, for me to say that, I'm well and truly stuffed!

The only downside to the day was my cold, which made me feel lethargic and droopy all day. It's a good thing my sister hasn't grown up yet, and took all the kids out to the park so that those of us feeling a little draggy could sit and digest for a while in peace!! But once they came back, it was bedlam all over again! My brother has 5 boys and they know only one way to play... FULL VOLUME!!! My head was ringing in about 30 seconds after they came in! Oh well... at least they were playing and not fighting! The only one crying was the youngest boy, and he's excused. He's not yet one year old.

I had a neat discovery today as well. My sister's Medieaval History textbook (why she's taking a Medieaval History class in university is a mystery to me!) had a reference to our family name with regard to a Germanic legend dating back to 860 A.D. It seems that my family is descended from a highly ranked warlord of the Visigoth clan that ruled Europe for over 2,030 years! In fact, it was the Visigoths that sacked Rome at the fall of the Roman Empire, and the king of my ancestor who did the sacking! It would be highly likely that this ancestor was at Rome, or his sons would have been there. This bit of information served to reinforce the initial information I found some years ago, which placed the initial record of my family's surname somewhere around 500 A.D. in the northern German Barony of Hombourg. Now the exercise is to find all the missing links between the recorded family history, which dates back to the early 1700s, and the first century. To have a legend in the family is pretty cool, though! I've always been interested in my family name and have adopted a modified version of the original coat of arms for my own. Someday, when I've figured out how to upload pictures here, I'll post it. Until then, you'll have to take my word for it!

Wow, I didn't realize I was running off at the fingers for so long! Oh well... I hope you enjoyed reading about my famous ancestor! If you didn't, that's what you get for reading my journal! It's SUPPOSED to be about ME!!

That is so cool about your family. I've tracked my mothers side, just to find out we probably aren't who we think we are. My ancestors came over on a boat when they were children and their parents died, and they were adopted. So, we don't know who the real parents line is. Haven't researched my dads side.
