Job Update

My good friend Flake has told me she's been waiting for an update on my new job. So, in order to keep her happy, and to avoid having to answer the same questions over an over again, here is a short update.

I've now finished two weeks at my new job as a Material Handler at Synnex Canada. I'm officially an Order Pick Clerk, which means I get to fill orders from the vast warehouse. It's not a "glamorous" job, but it is fairly easy and not too physically challenging. Before I started at this job I was wondering if my injured shoulder would be able to handle the demands placed on it, and I'm happy to say I've had no trouble with my shoulder whatsoever. My feet, on the other hand, are always sore now. I've finally broken down and bought yet another pair of Dr. Scholl's Workboot insoles, hoping that the new technology of gel and memory foam will give my feet some relief from the constant pounding they get. I'm guesstimating that I walk approximately 15 kilometers (about 9 - 10 miles) each day around the over 650,000 square feet of warehouse. Considering that for the most part of the previous year, I just sat on my butt playing at my computer every day, you can see why my feet are not quite used to this! LOL! I think I've also lost about 5 pounds already with all this walking, and I know I've lost an inch off my waist! I had to tighten my belt a notch on Thursday, which is a very good sign!

One other thing to report, I have already established myself at work as someone who learns quickly and have been asked to help mentor a new person already. Every day 5 - 6 new people start at this place, and their trainers aren't always available to help them. I don't mind helping new people out, as long as they are learning and not trying to do as little as possible.

There are a LOT of people working in this warehouse and I think most of them fall into the class of people I would call "Losers". I am amazed at the sheer laziness of some of my co-workers and the total lack of personal standards that so many of them exhibit. I just am floored by the number of times I come across an empty box left on a shelf, or empty plastic wrappers left lying on the floor as I make my rounds. Most of our carts have garbage bags attached to them, and it doesn't take any effort to toss an empty wrapper into the bag, or put an empty box on the cart. I pick up every empty box I can find so I can use them to fill orders of smaller items. I guess I am in the minority of warehouse workers. I care about my job, my efforts and my performance. I try not to let all this get me down while I am working, but some days I find myself getting very frustrated. Maybe I care too much?

I'm beginning to make some friends at work, but most of my co-workers are very young and I find myself not knowing what to say to them. Their taste in music, movies and other pop culture usually is so far from my own, we have no common ground on which to chat. I find myself spending my breaks alone most of the time, which, isn't really a bad thing. The only problem is, sometimes breaks can seem like they take forever when you're alone. I've always been somewhat of a loner, so it's not a big issue for me.

I hope I've given those of you who are interested an adequate overview of my job. The main thing is, I'm not hating it...yet! LOL!

Now I'm gonna go and re-dose myself with decongestants and try to get over this darn cold faster! Take care and have a great week, everyone!

Hee hee I knew if I nagged you enough eventually you would sit down and let us know how it is going. I am soooooooo happy that you aren't hating it and so far your shoulder is holding up.

I have 20 yrs working in retail and man oh man can I relate to most of what you said. I was often amazed at how lazy some of my fellow co workers were...the empty box thing strikes a cord too..lmao.

hang in there and know that I appreciate your efforts...

keep fighting the good fight..lol.

Hope the cold gets better soon.

most people want something for nothing. So they don't even try at work.
